The Community Council area is broadly bounded by the Whiteadder River to
the north and east, the Tweed to the south and the Hutton Castle area to
the west. It is a rural area with a number of large farms, a major estate
(Paxton House) and two main settlements: Hutton and Paxton villages with a
hamlet at Fishwick. The population of Hutton is about 100 and Paxton,
which has expanded significantly in recent years, is larger with a
population of over 200.

 |
Paxton has the
Cross Inn, the only pub in the 'constituency' and there is a part time
Post Office in the village hall at Hutton. Hutton Primary School at
present has a roll of 22 and secondary children attend Berwickshire
High School in Duns. There are Church of Scotland Kirks in both
villages with the manse in Hutton.
|
| The major
tourist site is the Palladian mansion: Paxton House (open Easter until
October) and its grounds, which are open all year. There is another
seasonal attraction: 'The Amazing Maize Maze' at Fishwick. Hutton
Castle, once the seat of Sir William Burrell is not open to the
public. There is self-catering accommodation in the area as well as
B&Bs. The Tweed cycleway goes through the locality and there are some
good footpaths and also there is the opportunity for fishing. The
Village halls provide the venue for many thriving clubs and
activities. |

| ISSUES |
|
|
 |
- It is hoped that the minimal zoning of
land for development in the SBC Draft Local Plan will protect the two
villages from over development.
- There is no additional drainage capacity
in either village. Representations have been made to Scottish Water to
solve recurrent problems.
|
|
- Hutton Primary School is unfortunately
under threat of closure as the result of a Scottish Borders Council
review. Local groups are contesting this.

Hutton Primary School |
|

Hutton Village Hall |
- The local community is attempting to
source funding for the upgrade or rebuild of Hutton Village Hall.
|
| LOCAL
PROJECTS Completed:
Paxton Village Green (initiative of local people who established a
Trust to raise funds and to build the Green). Paxton Village
Hall has been refurbished and extended with the support of Lottery
funding.

 |
|
Proposed:
Hutton Village Hall (see above issues). There is ongoing discussion
about the possible rebuilding or bypassing of the closed Bridge at Lovers
Loaning. This would allow for the reopening of an ancient roadway
and path for horse riders and walkers. Skateboard facility for
Paxton. New Village notice boards in Hutton and Paxton.
Community composting site in Hutton. |
