| Leitholm is a small Berwickshire village situated on the
fertile farming ground of the Merse. The population of the
village numbers about 230. Some of the inhabitants work locally,
some commute within the Borders, Edinburgh and Newcastle areas. The
village is supplied with natural gas. It has a garage and hotel
with a cosy child friendly pub called The Plough (01890840252) - proprietor
is Joan Pitman. |

Charterhall aerodrome is located nearby. This
WW2 drome is used for some of "The Jim Clark Rally" stages which are also
held on some of the small roads around Leitholm. Some evidence
shows that habitation can be traced back to the 16th century as a nearby
Peel Tower would testify. Visible remains of a Roman Fort at
Belchesteer indicate an early settlement. |
| Birgham is situated between Coldstream (3 1/2 miles) and
Kelso (5 1/2 miles) on a ridge to the north of the River Tweed.
A long established settlement (current population about 170}, which was the
scene of a treaty between the Scots and the English in 1690. It
has recently expanded with a significant number of detached houses in a
variety of styles. |

The unspoiled and peaceful countryside around Birgham is of
natural fertility and is intensively farmed. The views
southwards to the Cheviot Hills are striking. Fishing in the
Tweed adjoining Birgham , which includes the famous Dub Port, attracts the
enthusiasts from all over the British Isles. All of these
factors, together with the unusually dry climate, make Birgham an attractive
place to live. However, in common with other communities which
have an ageing population, Birgham suffers from a lack of local
amenitiess and from poor employment prospects. The village has a
playpark and a small village hall, a pub (currently being renovated} and a
cemetery, but it has no school, no shop or post office and no church.
Public transport is limited. |
